More Information: Marshall began his career as a children’s book author and illustrator one summer night in 1971 when he was sketching outside in a hammock. His mother was inside watching Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Upon hearing the two main characters, George and Martha, fighting, Marshall began making the drawings for two of his most popular characters: George and Martha, the hippopotami.
