More Information: Before Nancy Farmer became a writer, she was a scientist in Zimbabwe specializing in tsetse fly control. When she gave birth to her first child she had to stop working. “I got very depressed just sitting at home. Even though I adored my baby, I was used to going around having fun, and I wasn't having fun anymore. Then, when Daniel was four, I was reading him a book by Marjorie Forster, and I thought, 'Wow, I can do this!' And I sat down and wrote a short story. That's when I started being a writer.”
