More Information:

  • In kindergarten, when her other classmates were coloring pictures, Williams-Garcia said she was asking for a pencil and paper. “By twelve, I was sending short stories to magazines only to be politely rejected.” She believes young people’s literature is essential for children’s development. “Teens will read. They hunger for stories that engage them and reflect their images and experiences.”
  • Rita Williams-Garcia was also a Finalist for the National Book Award in 2010 for One Crazy Summer, which also won the Newbery Medal.
